What’s Happening At AHVISE In April 2019

Dear valued AHVISE Community,

We hope you have had a wonderful month of March and you’re enjoying the year so far. There are a lot of exciting things happening at AHVISE for both our volunteers and families to enjoy.

Remember, thanks to Aussie Helpers (our supporters) there are no $500 Family Placement fees for 2019 – Aussie Helpers support the Volunteers for their travel refunds (so families don’t have to do that) plus they fund the running and management of the AHVISE which has massively grown in 2018 from nothing!

1.  AHVISE Volunteer Poem Writing Competition 2.0

This month we will be hosting yet another competition for our volunteers starting April 1st 2019. We want you to write us a short poem about your most memorable placement experience along with a picture. We want to get to know your placement experience through your eyes so please make sure you participate. Our AHVISE organization is always happy to see the growth we have from hosting each competition and learning more about your experiences.

Check out our most recent blog on how to enter:

2. AHVISE Podcast Episodes

We are still looking for candidates for our new podcast show. If you know someone, a business representative or organisation that would be a great fit to come on our podcast show and have a chat with us??  Then we’d love to hear from them (or you!) Please email Ann or Nadege at AHVISE the relevant details, and we can take it from there!

We are looking for:

  • Volunteer stories
  • Family stories
  • Farming stories (good stories and challenges faced)
  • We are particularly interested in how this affects “kids” and their side of the perspective (for study purposes and just life in general)
  • Farm/remote property suppliers, service providers and businesses (relevant to kids)

3. Refer a new AHVISE Volunteer

Do you know someone who loves to travel, has an educational tutoring interest and wants to help other people?

This month AHVISE is launching a new campaign to drive more volunteers to sign up with AHVISE as a volunteer tutor.

If you know someone who you think would enjoy travelling whilst helping other people out, then we’d appreciate it if you could pass on the www.AHVISE.org.au website link to them, so they can think about joining us!

4. NEW AHVISE MENTOR PROGRAM

We have been contacted by a small group of university students based in Sydney, who have offered their mentoring services to five of our AHVISE students.

This is a trial of this service, and if things go well, this concept can grow in size. They have currently suggested only to NSW kids, but will consider applications from other States!

At this time, we are looking for five (of older primary school age) preferably high school age kids, who fit the following criteria:

  • Happy to chat on Skype once a week (minimum) with their “Mentor”
  • Choose whatever field (topic or subject) they need help with
  • Must have internet suitable for videoing conference during that cal

As this is a “trial” for us, we are open to flexible arrangements so all parties benefit.

If you think your child is a good fit for this program, maybe they could benefit from a Mentor who can help with motivation, the social engagement, but mostly the academic help, these mentors are a fantastic opportunity for your child!

This program is IN ADDITION to our normal AHVISE volunteer placements. So if you have a placement booked or in the past, this new “AHVISE Mentor Program” is in addition to that existing (onsite Volunteer placement) because it is so different in it’s application.

Please get in touch with Ann (Mon-Thurs) or Nadege (Fri-Sun) if you want to discuss this further, and ideally, we’d prefer the request in writing, and we can take action from there to set up a call with the Mentor to see if all parties are happy to proceed.

Don’t forget to like our official AHVISE Facebook page and we will see you next week for more updates!

Have a wonderful month and please feel free to contact our AHVISE support team if you have any questions.

*NEW* AHVISE Virtual Tutoring Program!

Dear Valued AHVISE Community,

At AHVISE we are dedicated to improving our services to better help our families living in rural/remote areas. Recently, we introduced our virtual classroom feature for volunteers and families. We have since decided to expand on this and include an online tutoring platform. This will provide new alternatives for volunteers to provide assistance to you and your family.

Below we have answered a few questions and included a step by step walkthrough on how to select this option when creating your placement. If you have any more questions please feel free to contact AHVISE for more answers.

What Is Online Tutoring?

Online tutoring is the newest development in education and is becoming increasingly popular worldwide. It works similarly to a physical classroom, and on some platforms, you can screen share. The volunteer and student can work one on one and the volunteer can assist the student with subjects they might be struggling with. We hope this platform will provide better assistance to your children living in rural areas.

How Does It Work?

The most common platform used for online tutoring is zoom, other platforms like Skype can also be used. By using zoom your volunteer can share their screen to partner read a story, or use the whiteboard to draw pictures and play activities together.

Why Do We Need It?

We understand there can sometimes be schedule conflict and your placement might not be filled on time. Living in remote areas can be challenging and we hope to eliminate these problems by providing you with different options. This platform is non-compulsory which gives you the freedom to choose what works best for you.

Can Volunteers Still Visit Us?

You still have the ability to request a volunteer to visit and help you on the farm. Online tutoring works to supplement our current program and provide you with new avenues to explore. On our website when you create a placement you will have 3 options, volunteer, online tutor or both. Then we will pair the right volunteer to your family for a great placement.

How To Select ‘Virtual Tutoring’:

Below we have included a step by step guide on how to select ‘virtual tutoring’ when creating a placement. Keep in mind you will also be able to choose both virtual tutoring and a home-stay tutor.

Aussie Helpers launches new AHVISE educational program in 2018 for Farm Kids

Welcome to AHVISE!

We are an educational volunteer organisation run by Aussie Helpers, comprising of a dedicated team of volunteers from all around Australia, who enjoy to give to others. We support rural and remote outback families who are looking for help in their remote school rooms. These include families, mothers and fathers, who teach their own children at home due to their geographic isolation.

If you haven’t already registered with AHVISE, you can do so today!

Click on the “SIGN UP” button on the top hand side of our website.

SIGN_UP_for_AHVISE

You can join as a volunteer, or a family.

FAMILY INFORMATION

If you are a farming family with kids who could use some extra help with their education, or if you are a teacher, tutor or angel who wants to help kids in our farming community learn more, and grow with a better education, then we’d love to hear from you.

We do background checks on all the volunteers and after you sign up you can enter a PLACEMENT AD – which we then check and publish for all registered volunteers to apply for, if your placement meets their preferences, location etc.

When a volunteer applies someone from our office will contact you and try to work out if that volunteer is a good fit. If it is a good fit, then we lock that placement is as “filled” and take down your placement ad. You can place as many ads as you like, to suit your child’s educational support required.

The volunteer will travel to your home (wherever you are in Australia) and normally they have their own transport, like a caravan, but some volunteers will prefer to stay on your property, maybe you have a spare room, or small home for visitors etc.

Normally families provide food for the duration of the volunteers stay, but all these details can be worked out when the time comes.

VOLUNTEER INFORMATION

If you are a person who loves helping others and have teaching background then you will fit in with our fantastic team of volunteers!

Farmers don’t like to admit when things are tough, and they are some of the proudest and most resilient people in Australia.  But sometimes they need our help, especially for their wonderful kids!

You will be required to formally “REGISTER” by clicking on SIGN UP – and once logged in, you will be asked to complete more questions about your experience, references, preference for ages of children you can tutor, etc.

You will be asked to upload a copy of your current Photo ID like a drivers licence, and at some point (prior to attending any placement) you will have to supply a Blue Card (for QLD) or the relevant “Working with Child” check ID.  All this information and more, will be available on your AHVISE profile dashboard once you have registered as a Volunteer.

FAQ’s!

Got Questions, we’ve got answers. You can always check the FAQ page on our website HERE.

Once you are registered you will have access to a more comprehensive “Training HUB” plus access to the “Financial HUB” for volunteer expenses refunds by AHVISE, and for families we ask a $500 donation towards the cost of your tutors. If volunteers request more than $500, Aussie Helpers provides up to $1,500 in total for travel cost refunds. If you have any questions about the financials, please contact our support (see below options).
